Another piece of great gaming nostalgia to me. Anybody else played it?

I did remember at one point being at the third-to-last level while playing as the Taiidan.

Oh yes, and this can carry on to Cataclysm and Homeworld 2, although I have little experience with either.

Never finished any of the single-player campaigns, but did play lots of Homeworld 2 with the Tactical Fleet Simulator mod. Fun times. Also dabbled a bit with the Battlestar Galactica mod.

Also - the sensor mode interface is quite possibly one of the most beautiful interfaces for a space-based RTS I have ever seen or heard.

I played and finished both Homeworld and Homeworld 2, although I didn't play Cataclysm. It still is one of my favorite RTS games of all time, not least because of its revolutionarily accessible 3D interface.

The first game, however, made it a little too easy to abuse Salvage Corvettes to cheese the unit cap, which trivialized the endgame. The sequel, for its part, took the whole Dynamic Difficulty thing a wee bit overboard in my opinion by making the missions almost absurdly hard if you tried to stack your force.

Also it has some of the best music in any game ever. I really should reinstall it some day and indulge in some nostalgia.

Homeworld 1: Revolutionized the 3d camera's utility. Great gameplay. Epic Music. Epic story. IMO best ending of any video game I played thus far.

Homeworld 2: Meh. Passable.

Everyone should play Homeworld to see the first big plot twist, which is one of the most memorable moments in the entire history of gaming.

What makes the sensor display beautiful? I have not noticed this, so please help me appreciate it.

I only played a little bit of Homeworld 1 and nothing of Homeworld 2, I did finish Cataclysm though. It was fun.

It's beautiful because you can do almost anything you want with the 3d camera.

Follow a bomber as it attacks cap ships? Check.

Zoom out to see a wide ranging battle between destroyers? Check.

It sounds commonplace now, but they didn't have such things back then.

Love the Homeworld games. The first had probably the most fun campaign I've ever played in any RTS. Cataclysm was OK, but not as fun as the original. Homeword II had stunning graphics, but the whole dynamic difficulty thing ruined the campaign. I still play HWII skirmishes every so often. The battles feel so epic when you zoom in on the massive destroyers and battlecruisers as swarms of tiny fighters cloud around them. And you gotta love the hyperspace effect, the ion beam blasts, and the flash-KRA-POW!! as a capital ship explodes.

I would say Homeworld 3 is probably one of my top 3 most hoped for games. Last I heard Relic would still like to make it some day, but that was over 2 years ago and nothing new has popped up about it.

I still play the occasional Homeworld skirmish. Cataclysm was easy, but the plot wasn't as solid as the first. And ditto on the dynamic difficulty thing in 2, good LORD. Never finished it.

But 2 has the better visuals. For being a 12-year-old game, 1 is still nice. I had the Game of the Year edition, so I think I still have the soundtrack CD floating around somewhere - listen to the music anywhere.

Homeworld was the first video game I ever played that made me feel something besides kill-lust for killing mooks. I still get choked up watching Kharak getting burnt to a cinder, via youtube.

May I recommened the FX mod for Homeworld II? Adds back in the Taiidan, Kadeshi, Turanic Raiders AND Progenitors. There's also Empire, which does... something, I haven't played it yet.

Found here.

And I love Home World. It's my favorite game on the PC, ever.

Wuh oh. Does that mean they're going to release a half-baked sequel to yet another beloved franchise? Their rep is in the shitter now; if they take on Homeworld, they'd better put up a good showing.

Will they hire Relic to develop it?

I've gotten past the Sea of Lost Souls level, though I've gotten involved in a bunch of other games, so I haven't played it anymore in a while xD

Relic is now a part of Sega, if I recall correctly, who was burned by the Colonial Marines catastrophe, and likely are on nasty terms with Gearbox.

And... Fuck. Gearbox lost all of my respect with the Colonial Marines catastrophe. Unless something amazing comes out of this, RIP Homeworld.

I don't really give a damn if they release console versions. I just want a PC version that is playable and has the same awesome 3D mechanics.

Or it could be an awesome revisit to the franchise. Can we shelve the paranoid pessimism? Gearbox has every incentive to nail this one. At least, if they don't, they've got to know they'll be dooming their reputation.

Look, if they don't know enough to shape up after A:CM, then yes, they deserve to be abandoned. But please, once again, can we cut out the foaming at the mouth? It doesn't do you any credit.

Hmm... I really don't know... Gearbox has done FPSes throughout its history, so it's a rather odd choice for the IP to go.

EDIT: I mean there's Borderlands Legends, but still...

They'll probably just make it a FPS.

Then in one level when the enemy is invading one of them will say ALL YOUR BASES ARE BELONG TO US.

Also apparently Gearbox Outbidded Paradox and Stardock, who would have been GREAT for Homeworld...oh I'm sad.

Yeah, Stardock basically makes Homeworld, just with no plot and a control scheme that isn't as much of a hassle.
