Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard (MB) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List

Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.

What goes through this thread?

    Examples
  • Cut requests. If you believe a MB has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
  • If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's MBs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
  • If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
  • Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
  • If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.

What does not go through this thread?

    Examples
  • New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
  • Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
    • Any MB link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
    • If an MB link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
  • Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved MBs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
  • Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
  • Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
    • Spelling and grammar fixes.
    • Pothole changes.
    • Minor rewordings.
    • Spoiler tags.

While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:

  1. Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
  2. If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
  3. Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.

Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.

As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their MB equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

[up] if there are things in the entry that are spoilers then those should be marked on the YMMV page.

I have an issue with Focalors' entry in Genshin Impact: it is entirely hidden by spoilers, so a reader would have no idea who it is or what part of the story it's about without clicking it, with it then showing what for most of the Fontaine story is assumed to be Furina (not exactly who you'd expect to be a MB). Can we add a short non-spoilered part at the beginning that lets the reader know this is about the Fontaine Archon Quests?

[up] If the quest is not a spoiler, then I think that would be fine.

For presentation's sake would it be worth making a "Fixers" subsection so we don't have so many entries needing to start with the same "X is The Fixer for such and such"?

Have one I'd like to possibly contend, Cassian from John Wick: Chapter 2.

  • Cassian, bodyguard to Gianna D'Antonio, is a confident and charismatic assassin who is an old acquaintance of John Wick. Upon the death of Gianna, Cassian instantly centers on John for revenge, intending on wiping out all responsible for his ward's death. Cassian hunts John to New York, matching wits, guns and blades with John and proving a match even for the other talented assassin.

Like my issue is. He doesn't ever really do anything notably cunning or smart? Like sure he's not stupid by any means, but there's never really anything that makes him stand out from the myriad of other assassins in that world. Nearly all of his actions in the film can be summed up as "chases John, then shoots or fights him", there's never any trickery, manipulation, Awesome by Analysis or anything of that sort.

Now Cassian certainly has coolness and charm nailed down, and he also goes out on a more dignified note compared to the other assassins John kills in that film. But the level of intellect he shows is just too baseline to be Magnificent. He's definitely a competent fighter, but he's never really depicted as a cunning fighter.

So yeah, that's my two cents on him. Any thoughts?

I agree, Cassian does nothing special compared to the many other assassins chasing John, he's more sympathetic but he's just another assassin in a long line of them

Having recently seen John Wick 2, I agree Cassian’s a cut.

Cut Cassian. Until I saw the latest movie I wasn't entirely sold on assassin!Keanu Reeves either. ...By which I mean John Wick himself. Yeah he meets the bastard criteria but up until Chapter 4 never really does anything beyond what other spy movie protagonists do or at least nothing outstandingly magnificent. But without going on too much of a tangent, yes Wick is a keep but Cassian is just an above average intelligence bodyguard. By the by, since we have several Omnicidal Maniacs as examples (Rau Le Crueset from Gundam SEED, Tobi/Obito (assuming he's still up) Sephiran from Fire Emblem to name a few) what counts as too awful by OM standards? I'm aware racist genocidal villains can't count, unless they're part of a minority and that's a case by case thing like they actually have to get over their prejudice or something, but what about someone like Joel from The Last of Us? I'm aware there's probably other reasons he doesn't count (like getting offed quite early in TLOU 2) but if that character has a ward, could that character graduate to MB status? (Yes I am talking about Ellie from TLOU 2. Given people's visceral reaction to the game I'm wondering if it's too divisive to have a candidate or if it does, it's Anti-Hero protagonist would be a good shot.)

Unfortunately I think Cassian can go, doesn’t quite have the feats to back it up.

Cut Cassian.

Personally, I question whether the Shinobi should be kept as well, as in my eyes they're in a similar boat of not really doing much besides following Zero's orders and chasing Wick down.

Those two I’ll easily vouch for. Hyper-Competent Sidekick is in full effect. They even manage to get John dead to rights multiple times but let him up because they’re enjoying fighting him so much and want to see him at his best.

Yeah Shinobi I think I'm fine with. They have more feats outside of just chasing John, and they do succeed in ambushing him.

Here's the expansions

  • Godzilla, King of the Monsters, is the keeper of balance and the mighty beast who first hunts down the MUTO duo across the world to prevent them from damaging the biosphere irreparably. Showing his intellect by baiting the male into a trap to finish him with a strike of his tail and cornering the female before beheading her by a blast of atomic breath into her mouth, Godzilla returns later to face his ages-old foe King Ghidorah whom he attempts to bring into the water where he is stronger. Defeating Ghidorah and reasserting himself as king of the Titans, Godzilla later begins to strike at Apex facilities when they attempt to experiment with Ghidorah. Upon the entrance of King Kong, Godzilla wastes no time in pragmatically attempting to drown his rival, later facing Kong in Hong Kong and besting him before acknowledging him as a worthy opponent and departing in peace after the fall of Mechagodzilla. Later sensing the return of his ancient enemy the Skar King, Godzilla seeks out sources of power to strengthen himself for the coming conflict and allies with Kong and Mothra to put an end to the False King.
  • King Kong, ruler of Skull Island, is an intelligent and dangerous ape who responds to threats with brutal attacks, wiping out a contingent of trespassing soldiers in Skull Island. Facing the Skullcrawlers, Kong kills the Alpha with a combination of brains and nearby weaponry, before resuming his kingship over Skull Island. Later brought in to face Godzilla, Kong proves a Worthy Opponent for the Titan Alpha, resorting to his wits in the face of Godzilla's overwhelming might and utilizing an ax from materials in the Hollow Earth to counter Godzilla's atomic breath. Kong is the one to destroy Mechagodzilla himself, wielding his empowered ax and his own might, before making peace with Godzilla and returning to the Hollow Earth in peace. Delving deeper into Hollow Earth in search of his people, Kong bonds with the young ape Suko before confronting the tyrannical Skar King. Injured by the King’s abused pet Shimo, Kong uses various traps to defeat the Skar King’s minions before teaming up with Godzilla, Mothra, and Suko to stop the King’s conquest of the surface. With the help of his allies Kong is able to free Shimo from the Skar King’s control and kill him before taking his place as king of the Apes with Shimo and Suko by his side.

[tup] for the expansions.

This was mentioned a while back as something that should be done, so here's a rewrite of Sirhan Dogen.

  • Gyakuten Kenji 2: Sirhan Dogen is an elderly former assassin who was once put away by Miles Edgeworth. Killing President Di-Jun Huang twelve years prior as part of a conspiracy to get his body double to replace him, Dogen manages to escape his co-conspirator's attempt to off him with the assistance of Simon Keyes, whom he had saved six years prior. Upon being put in the jail overseen by one of the conspirators, Patricia Roland, Dogen uses the knowledge he has about the coverup to blackmail her into letting him smuggle items into the prison for any prisoner that requests something. When his contact with Simon ceases abruptly, Dogen escapes prison to find out what happened to him, avoiding the police for several days in the process. Eventually meeting up with Edgeworth and his allies, Dogen tells them more about Huang's assassination as well as helping them discover the identity of the mastermind before escaping again, only to come back to save Simon from Shelly de Killer and go back to prison with Simon in tow.

As the one who proposed him, that looks much better. Thank you.

On the subject of Ace Attorney I do remember us voting to cut Pierce Nichody, due to being rather condescending to the Judge, Edgeworth, you know the people who he kinda needs on his side for his plans to come to fruition but he was still kept on the page. Any word on that?
